Burlingame, Calif. - More than 25,000 consumers have signed a petition in support of Virgin America's application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and have sent more than 50,000 letters to the Department and Congress asking that the airline's application to fly be approved.

SAN FRANCISCO - Maverick airline Virgin America told U.S. government regulators it’s prepared to overhaul its ownership, jettison its chief executive and possibly even change its name to gain clearance to fly — an ambition that has been blocked because of the startup’s ties to British entrepreneur Richard Branson.
